Your Buying Guide to Instant Pots

If you are considering buying one of these devices, or if you simply have one and you are wondering what to do next, we will answer your questions.

Here is our list of 15 things you should know about the Instant Pot 7-in-1 multifunctional cooker.

Instant pot After soaking in water, the rice is drained before it enters the Instant Pot. Tina Russell / The Penny Hoarder

  • They are seven tools in one. As the \\ 7-in-1 \\-name implies, will invoice itself as a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, pot saute, steamer, warmhoudpot and yogurt maker.
  • The most popular version costs about $ 100. The 6-quart pot Instant currently sells for $ 99.00 on Amazon and $ 99.99 at Target and Walmart websites.
  • There are a few versions. While the 6-quarter version is $ 99, there is also a 5-quarter model (price ranges from $ 93 to $ 135) and an 8-quarter model ($ 130). There is even a model equipped with Bluetooth that costs $ 167, if you are so fully high tech, that you have to operate your kitchen equipment with your smartphone.
  • The sales arguments are \quick\ and \tasteful\. Just like any pressure cooker or slow cooker, the Instant Pot offers cooking on-and-forgetting. The fans say that the food boils much faster than a slow cooker and that cooking at high temperatures gives a lot of flavor.
  • They are cheaper than before. Last year, the 6-quarter version cost $ 120 instead of the current price tag of $ 100.
  • They can go on sale later this year. In 2015 and 2016 they went on sale on Amazon Prime Day. Amazon dropped the 6-quarters model to $ 69 last year and sold 215,000 units.
  • Amazon has not planned Prime Day 2017 yet, but it will probably be somewhere in mid-July. Still no idea if Instant Pots will be for sale again. During the holiday season last year, shoppers found Instant Pots for sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
  • The device is not intuitive. People often say that the Instant Pot is user-friendly, but all those buttons and settings can seem overwhelming at first. Do not get intimidated. Sit down and read the manual first. View some introductory videos like this, this or this. Do not just pull it out.
  • Another selling argument is safety. Your grandmother’s fast cooker was a scary, rattling, hissing thing. Microwaves have replaced those old pressure cookers from the 50s and 60s for fast cooking. New pressure cookers such as the Instant Pot and its Cuisinart and Breville competitors are easier to use and have more safety functions.
  • This stove is best for food that you want to keep soft. Cooking under high pressure makes the meat very soft. It is good for foods that you want soft and juicy, but you want them quickly. Remember ribs, chicken, pork, lamb, chili, risotto, soups, stews, beans and hard boiled eggs.
  • It may contain brown meat if you use the \saute\ function. Before you start the cooking process under pressure, you can click the button \\ asepen \\ to sear meat fixed at the bottom of the stainless steel pot of the device. You press the \customize\ button to choose from three settings low, medium or high. Keep the lid open. A note here: a food writer who tested the device, wrote, You can not really get a good color on you meat with relatively low heat from an electric cooker. For a better browning, I will sear on the stove and then transfer to the Instant Pot for the quick smother.
  • It is not good to make food crunchy, crunchy or crispy. Chicken or potatoes roasted in theInstant Pot will never have that nice crispy crust.
  • Here we let the food writer Melissa Clark of New York Times explain a disadvantage of pressure cookers: â € œThey do not crunchy or crunchy. Although most cookers allow you to brown meat and vegetables on the sauté function before cooking, all crunchy pieces under the steam will collapse under pressure once you have locked on the lid.Ã ¢ â,¬
  • So many recipes, so little time
  • 12. There are a million, billion, trillion, gajillion Instant Pot recipes on the internet. No kidding here.

Social media drive the popularity of Instant Pot. The Facebook community page has nearly half a million members. The different models have almost 18,000 reviews on Amazon.

Fans love to share their recipes for chicken or chili or risotto, or for stranger use such as popcorn or cheesecake. Some good places to start are here, here or here.

  • Some recipes take longer than their titles indicate. Of course the recipe can be called \\ quinoa \\ or \\ 7 minutes rice \\ or \\ 20 minutes beef stew \\, but it will take longer than that. It can take 10-15 minutes for the appliance to build up pressure before cooking, plus more time to reduce the pressure after cooking.
  • Use a cup of liquid to prepare meat. If you start, it is a good rule of thumb to use a cup of liquid if you are under pressure cooking meat. That can include broth, water, soy sauce, etc. Too much liquid will dilute the taste.
  • It has a cool lid. A food blogger, Dad Cooks Dinner, says that his favorite function is the built-in lid holders on the Instant Pot. When you remove the hot lid, you do not have to place it on the counter. You can place a lip on the side of the lid in one of the handles of the Instant Pot and the lid is still on its side.

Open the lid for safety reasons. And never force the Instant Pot open.
